SUSTAINABILITY

SOLAR PANELS.

In 2020 we started our solar energy project and come 2021 it was complete - we have installed solar panels on our flat roof in St Philips which provide electricity for the brewery and also feeds back into the grid. By using the sun’s energy we are reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.

CORNSTARCH LABELS.

We have moved to all cornstarch labels on our cans. They're more expensive than plastic labels but we believe the cost is worth it as they can be recycled along with your can in your regular recycling bin. They’re made from renewable sources with no toxic chemicals.

natural carbonation & carbon capture.

We call the bubbles in beer carbonation as they are carbon dioxide (CO2). All of the bubbles in our beer are created by the yeast in the beer itself - this is live beer or naturally carbonated beer and means we don’t use excess CO2. There is CO2 released during the fermentation process and we are currently working on a project to capture and reuse this CO2 so it’s not let into the atmosphere. In addition we are working on a project for anaerobic respiration.

UNFINED

As pioneers of the unfined beer movement we have been removing unnecessary ingredients and wastage from brewing since 2007. Do you want fish guts in your beer? We don’t.  Which is why we changed the rules and stopped the use of isinglass finings, laying the groundwork for the hazy, vegan friendly beers you enjoy today. Hard choices aren’t instantly popular or easy. You can thank us by enjoying our beers.

spent grain & HOPS.

The bulkiest waste material from the brewing process is called “spent grain” - basically the used up malt that provides the colour, flavour and sugars for beer. Farmer Jim pops by every week to collect our spent grain and also our spent hops to use for animal feed and fertilizer on his farm in nearby Somerset. He gets the odd beer from us too!

sUstainable cardboard.

For anyone that’s ever ordered a packaged beer online or had one delivered to them in a hospitality venue - you’ll know the boxes are made from cardboard. Our packaging company uses FSC certified cardboard for production. We try to reuse boxes inhouse as much as possible and all final cardboard waste is recycled.

bike couriers.

If we could bike couriers to deliver nationally we would! Until that’s a possibility we use bike couriers to deliver to most Bristol postcodes.

cans over bottles.

Cans are lighter than glass bottles therefore reduce fuel usage and they use 90% less energy in recycling too. Our cans are made from 50% recycled aluminium and the suppliers we work with are all investing hugely in green infrastructure and creating fully circular products.

TOO GOOD TO GO

We reduce our waste by using Too Good To Go - surplus beer, dented & mislabelled cans are all rescued by local customers.

leds & timed lights

We have invested in LED lights & timers where possible to cut our power usage.
